Why settle? Go for the gold!
In my long life as a competitive athlete, I have worked with great coaches who have brought me much further down the path to excellence than I could ever have imagined. The 12-year-old who came in last in his first high school cross country race subsequently competed in two short-track speedskating national championships., competed in 11 Ironman races with a best time of 11:49, ran a 6:09 mile, won his age group in the Baltimore Marathon and many other races, and much more. Olympic speed skater and gold, silver, and bronze medalist Diane Holum, Eric Heiden's coach, who, along with a cadre of other coaches and exercise physiologists, coached my daughter and me at and after Olympic Speed Skating camp in Marquette, Michigan.
Jim Spivey, three-time Olympian who set records in the mile and other distances, from whom I have learned so much and whose guidance has been instrumental to my training and racing since 1993.
Mike Plumb, former Canadian cross country champion and pro Ironman triathlete, whose distance coaching led to my first qualification and then requalifications for the Boston Marathon, a top-10 finish in my age group at Ironman Canada, age group victories and second place finishes in multiple half Ironman races in Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin, and many other podium finishes.
Tom Olson, masters swim coach, under whom I greatly improved my swimming form and times.
Interesting, you might say, but why is this relevant in a business setting? In my previous post, 22 principles I have learned about being an athlete, principle number 8 says it all:
“A coach ups our game. A coach knows things about your sport that you do not know. He or she has been there. And a coach not only lays out what you should do, but motivates you and holds you accountable. My coaches have made me a much, much better athlete.”
That’s exactly the case for business coaching. A business coach who “has been there” and has the right skill sets for coaching, planning, decision making and implementation, can help you develop and execute a winning plan, guide your decision making and actions along the way, motivate you, and hold you accountable.
